Khali in Kumaon

A customisable holiday and the definitive guide to all things Kumaon, a former kingdom at the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas. Start from Khali Estate, embark on a multi-day tour around the historical capital, Almora, walk the forest trails of Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, and more.

december 1, 2025 to may 30, 2026 | september 15 to november 30, 2026

Overview

Walk into Khali and you walk into history. The house stands quiet among the hills, once built by Sir Henry Ramsey—later an ashram for Gandhi, a retreat for Nehru’s family. Today, it’s a mountain hotel, calm and inviting. Spend three days here, letting the peace soak in.

Step outside and the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary calls. Paths twist through forests; the Himalayas hover at the edge of sight. Old villages rest in the hills, unchanged, still welcoming. You walk their trails, breathe the cool air, stay as guests among friends.

We invite you to join us for a deeper look into the history of an ancient Kumaon kingdom. Go on invigorating walks through pristine rhododendron and oak forests, and visit the tiny hamlets in the valley.

This October, we will be commemorating 20 years of Village Ways and 150 years of Khali Estate for a special 150/20 celebration. Scroll down to know more.

What's included

Day-to-day itinerary

Arrive at Delhi airport before being transferred to a comfortable guesthouse for the night.

A transfer and the early morning day train from Delhi into the Himalayan foothills at
Kathgodam. Take a private car to Khali Estate. Spend the evening relaxing on the deck.

Your accommodation is in individual, comfortable stone rondavel cottages set amongst pine trees.
After a short introduction to the following days, it’s time for a lip-smacking Indian dinner.

Spend a leisurely day exploring Khali Estate, learning about its history and the
distinguished guests who spent time studying the surrounding valley.
Follow a trail around the estate taking in the farm, gardens, and other historic spots.

Begin a 3-day walking exploration of the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary with
its primordial oak and rhododendron forests and glimpses of the high peaks beyond.
Stay in two of the original Village Ways houses for two evenings.

Your final walk brings you back to Khali Estate for an afternoon exploring
lively Almora’s market, shops, and historical buildings.
Visit Khali school, originally established on the estate,
now a local primary supported by Village Ways.

A private car takes you on the Gandhi trail, further into the hills at Kausani.
Here the Mahatma established some of his first looms for homespun cotton
and an ashram, both of which continue today.
Return to Khali Estate in the evening.

A day at Khali to make your own. Relax and enjoy the place, take a guided walk into
the sanctuary, and arrange a visit to the temples at Jageshwar. The choice is yours.

Visit the delightful lake-side hill station Nainital. Take in another Gandhi ashram and the famous hospital established by former Commissioner Sir Henry Ramsey. Spend the night in a historic Nainital hotel.

Jim Corbett is still revered today – a fearless ‘man-eater’ hunter throughout Kumaon,
he soon evolved into an important conservationist. Spend your last day in the museum
that celebrates his life. Drive to the station and take an afternoon train to New Delhi.
