Overview

Many things are claimed to be a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity, but this really is a gold-plated bucket list top-ten that gives you an amazing buzz of enjoyment and achievement. Staying in our community-run tented camp on a grassy alpine meadow ridge and waking to the sun rising over the mountain tops of Nanda Devi and Panchachuli is a thrill and truly the privilege of a lifetime available to only the few.

This is camping, but not as you know it. The tents are ready and welcoming, porters carry your luggage, and your meals are cooked on an open fire by the community team, leaving you free to soak up the views. You sit and watch, and wonder if you might just stay here forever.

Day-to-day itinerary

You stay for a night in the heart of Supi village in our three bedroom community-owned-and-run guesthouse, hiking from Supi up to the campsite for a night before descending back to the village for a final night.

What's included

From the roadhead, you will walk to the picturesque village of Supi to be greeted with a refreshing drink and snack. Unwind for the day and take an evening walk around this village observing how every family has expressed their flair for colour from the way they’ve decorated their traditional homes. Spend the night in the Supi guesthouse.

After a hearty breakfast, begin the ascent to our remote Jaikuni campsite. Stop under the shade of the mighty rhododendron trees and enjoy a picnic lunch. The Jaikuni camp sits on a bugyal, (an Alp in local language) a grassy meadow lying along the 3,000 m high ridge that separates the Saryu and Pindar valleys. Spend the night in spacious safari-style tents with twin beds piled with blankets. There is a separate but very simple bathroom tent, the cooks’ tent – and nothing else but magnificent views across the Pindar valley to some of the Himalayas most iconic peaks including the 7,816 metre Nanda Devi – the highest mountain entirely within India.

Spend the day taking in the majestic valleys, before heading back to Supi via a different but equally scenic route. Pass historic temples but barely encounter a soul apart from your group and your guide. Your guides will keep a look out for a troop of beautiful silver macaques, for barking deer, porcupines, wild boar, and stunning birds of prey. Spend one more charming evening before calling it a night in the Supi guesthouse.

Bid farewell to this enchanting hamlet and make your way back to the roadhead, where you’ll be picked up by our car. Transfers from Haldwani and Kathgodam or elsewhere are available on request, and we can also arrange for train journeys.

A traditional ‘berklay’ longhouse with three en-suite twin bedrooms, the guesthouse offers stunning views of the Himalayan peaks from its terrace. As a community-owned venture, staying here supports local villagers, while you can enjoy guided village tours, traditional cooking, and walks through the peaceful terraced fields and woods surrounding the village.

The safari-style tented campsite on Jaikuni bugyal offers a unique high-altitude experience on a beautiful alpine meadow at around 10,000 feet. Is this for you?

For the hike to the camp, you do need a reasonable degree of fitness, but there are plenty of places to rest and to savour the magnificent views or to pause for some bird watching. Pilgrims have been hiking up (and up) to the hilltop temples for centuries, and as many as 1,000 still do once a year to this day. Meanwhile, your porters will be racing up so your bags are waiting for your arrival.

This is a high-altitude trek that will take you up to 3,100 m above sea level.

There is no set time or pace for this mix of long and short walks uphill and downhill. Take your own sweet time, our guides are right there waiting.
